My Brush With The Unconscious -
Real-life personal experience

The first I learned that I have another mind called an unconscious or subconscious mind was when I read Harold Sherman's How to Make ESP Work for You.

A hidden mind working behind the scenes! Wasn’t that unbelievable? But what surprised me even more was that this subconscious mind largely influenced what happened in my life. And what was most unbelievable of all was that I could program this mind to get me what I wanted.

Was this really true? My curiosity was picked and I started reading books on the subject by Sherman and others.

Now these books gave me knowledge but not belief in what they said. It was like reading testimonials of others. You half believe what other say. The real belief comes only when you experience something for yourself.

Asking the unconscious to get a job

At the time I was reading all this, I was in a financial bind. I had a low-paying dead-end job which did not pay my bills. If I wanted pull on I had to find a better paying job - and that too very fast. Then an idea came to me. Why not use my need for a job to test if all that I was reading worked or not. Why not to try what I had been reading about mental powers to find a good job.

So I picked a method called visualization that I had read about. It is supposed to work like this: you picture what you want to achieve as if it has already become a reality in your life. If you do this with intensity and feeling, the idea gets to your subconscious mind and you get what you want.

So I started visualizing that I had already got the job I wanted, was working at it and getting paid for it.

But while doing this I didn't feel very much optimistic about the outcome. This was because in the first instance, I didn't quite believe what I had been reading. Then the job I wanted existed in my mind only - I wanted a high paying job in a particular environment. And if this was not enough I didn't have any specialized skills or work experience needed for a high-paying job.

Did I succeed against all these odds? Did I get a job?

No, I didn't. Not the next week or the next month. Something like six or more months passed without any result and I had nearly given up on this idea when I received a letter from a recruiting agent whom I had approached for a job long back. He wanted me to see him if I still needed a job. I was to go to him on a certain day when he would be interviewing candidates for a well-paying overseas job.

That letter sent a thrill through me. Then a doubt set in. Would I get this job? Did I have a chance against other job-seekers who could well be better qualified than me?

These thoughts were in the back of my mind when I entered the agent’s office on the appointed day. I expected to see a lot of other people waiting their turn to be interviewed. But the office was empty except for the agent sitting behind his desk. He was talking on the phone and waved me to a chair.

As I sat down I thought that perhaps I had come on the wrong day. But when he had finished talking, the agent told me that I was the only candidate. Nobody else had turned up.

Then he looked at my testimonials, asked me some questions and said that the job was mine. The only thing that I had to do was to pay the airfare. The employers would pay back the amount when I joined them.

This sent my hopes crashing down. I didn't have that kind of money nor could I borrow that much from anybody. I told this to that man, thanked him and got up to leave. But he waved me back to the chair, 'Please wait a minute.'

I sat back wondering what more he had to say to me. Then he asked me about my family background and my current job and what I made from it.

As the questions continued I thought that he was trying to be nice. He wanted to lessen my disappointment by showing interest in my affairs. At the end of all this I expected him to tell me that he would keep me in mind if another such job turned up.

But I can't still believe what he said, "Ok I will pay your airfare now but you have to pay me back as soon as you can."

Was this the result of workings of the subconscious or just coincidence? I was not sure.

However when I started getting too many positive results to be written off to chance alone that I began to believe that there indeed was something to the workings of the subconscious mind.

Did Visualization Work For Me All The Time?

Here I should tell you frankly that visualization hasn’t worked for me all the time. Not even for the most achievable goals.

I have often wondered why a method should work in some cases and not in others. There must certainly be some reason for that but I didn’t find it in all the books I had been reading on the subject over the years.

But as it often happens, your subconscious gives you the answer to a nagging question that has been in the back of your mind in a most unexpected manner.

With me it happened with an email. It recommended a new e-book: How to Get Lots of Money for Anything - Fast! by Stuart Lichtman and Joe Vitale.

We all receive such emails almost everyday and I would perhaps have ignored it hadn’t I caught the name of Joe Vitale who happens to be my favorite writer. So I looked at the book and I am glad I did.

It had the answer to the question that had been puzzling me for so long:

Why visualization and other goal-achievement methods work sometimes but not always?

More importantly the book showed which technique worked and why.
